- The car sped through metal fencing near the Abbott Memorial Lighthouse before plunging into the ocean, with the male driver self-extracting while the passenger remained trapped inside the submerged vehicle.
- Four rescue swimmers from the Santa Cruz Fire Department entered the water to extract the trapped passenger, while the Central Fire District and Scotts Valley Fire Department assisted in the operation.
- The passenger was transported to a medical facility but died despite life-saving efforts, while the driver sustained minor injuries; university spokesman Scott Hernandez-Jason stated, "Our deepest condolences go out to the student."
- Authorities have not yet determined the circumstances that led to the vehicle leaving the roadway, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
