1 in 6 Adults Feel Lonely Often or Always
Researchers said 135,725 volunteers were surveyed, and nearly 1 in 6 adults reported feeling lonely often or always.
An Imperial College London study of over 135,000 adults found high levels of loneliness concentrated in major cities, including London, Birmingham, and Manchester.
The INTERACT study, conducted across England, revealed that environmental surroundings and social networks significantly influence how often individuals experience feelings of isolation.
Nearly 44% of respondents reported increased loneliness since the COVID-19 pandemic, while almost one in six adults currently feel lonely "often or always."
NHS GP Azeem Majeed warned of health consequences, stating, "As an NHS GP, I see how loneliness affects both the mental and physical health of my patients."
Study lead Austen El-Osta explained the "urban paradox," where major cities often report lower life satisfaction and connectivity despite offering greater economic and cultural advantages.
