1,829-acre Bobcat Lakes fire near Wisdom prompts campsite closures, structure protection
Crews are building a fuel break and monitoring critical fire weather as 77 personnel work to contain the blaze.
The Bobcat Lakes Fire, burning 12 miles east of Wisdom in Beaverhead County, has consumed 1,829 acres since starting July 31, 2026, with crews managing the incident within the West Pioneer Wilderness Area.
A total of 77 personnel are currently assigned to the incident, including Type 2 hand crews and an interagency hotshot crew working to contain the blaze despite hot, dry conditions.
Firefighters are constructing a fuel break extending from Pettengill Road toward Willow Campground while crews remove hazardous trees along the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway. Officials urge drivers to reduce speeds due to equipment traffic.
Officials have closed all camping in the area for the time being as the fire's cause remains undetermined. Moderate activity persists above Jerked Prairie to the north and east.
Crews are also monitoring the Sand Creek Fire, located 6 miles southeast, as hot weather and wind gusts complicate suppression efforts for both blazes. Challenging conditions are expected to persist through the week.
