Thieves Steal $4.3M Necklace from Vienna Museum
Police said the necklace was set with 673 diamonds and valued at more than $4 million, prompting an international manhunt.
- Two unmasked men stole a historic diamond necklace belonging to Queen Nazli from MAK in Vienna during a brazen daytime smash-and-grab, using a hammer to shatter a display case in front of shocked witnesses.
- Commissioned for Queen Consort Nazli of Egypt in 1939, the Art Deco piece features 673 diamonds and previously fetched $4.3 million at a Sotheby auction in 2015 before returning to Van Cleef & Arpels.
- The necklace was previously targeted in a 2021 theft attempt in Paris, where French authorities arrested three individuals practicing to break glass display cases at the Natural History Museum.
- Austrian Police released CCTV footage of the two suspects following the theft, while Investigators suspect the robbery was a contracted job for an organized criminal ring targeting European cultural institutions.
- Archaeologist Shaimaa Farouk warned that "a display case is not the beginning of protection," urging museums to create digital identities for artifacts and document them throughout their lifecycle to prevent substitution.
