AFL in shock as former Port star dies suddenly aged 37: ‘True tragedy’
Port Adelaide said Stewart’s death was devastating and will wear black armbands in its first Adelaide Oval home game in 2027.
On Friday, former Port Adelaide player Daniel Stewart died suddenly at the age of 37, leaving the AFL world in shock following the passing of the 200cm forward.
Selected in the 2009 Rookie Draft after playing with North Adelaide in the SANFL, Stewart made 36 appearances and kicked 31 goals during his three-year stint with the Power.
Calling Stewart's death "a true tragedy," TV pundit Kane Cornes, a former teammate, remembered him as a "brilliant and caring teammate who always had a smile on his face."
Port Adelaide Football Club chief executive Matthew Richardson extended condolences to Stewart's family, including wife Laura, sons Bernie and Lando, and brother Leigh, saying the club is "deeply saddened."
In tribute, the club will wear black armbands during its first home game of the 2027 season at Adelaide Oval while providing support to those affected by the passing.
