Advocates push for advance MAID requests two years after Parliament recommendation
Canada’s medical assistance in dying laws do not allow for advance requests, which are written requests to die with medical assistance under specific conditions, made before the patient loses the capacity to provide consent. A 2023 report from a joint parliamentary committee on medical assistance in dying, also known as MAID, recommended changing the Criminal Code to allow advance requests in the event a person is diagnosed with a serious and incurable condition that leads to incapacity. The committee wrote that “an advance request must be voluntary, non-coercive, well-considered and made by a person with the requisite capacity.” But the change has not been made.

64 arrested, 155 charges laid during retail theft crackdown in Durham Region
Durham police say 64 people arrested and 155 charges were laid following a month-long retail theft investigation across the region. Investigators say the Safe Shop initiative ran between Nov. 10 and Dec. 16, 2025, led by the East Division Community Response Unit, with support from front-line officers and the LCBO Resource Protection Unit. Police say officers focused on high-theft retail locations, maintaining a visible presence aimed at deterring criminal activity and improving public safety.
