In New York, mayor Eric Adams announced the city’s homeless shelter system was “at its breaking point.”, while in Illinois, Governor Pritzker issued a disaster proclamation over the influx of bused migrants.

Finally, we examine Split Headlines covering the news that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sent two planes of migrants to Martha’s vineyard.

Gov. Pritzker issues disaster proclamation to assist migrants bused in from Texas

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) issued an emergency disaster proclamation on Wednesday and activated 75 members of the Illinois National Guard in an effort to provide for the more than 500 asylum seekers that have arrived in Chicago thus far. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) began sending migrants from the southern border to various Democratic-run cities, including Washington, D.C., New York City and Chicago, in April.

Shelter system at 'breaking point,' Adams says

New York City has a court-mandated right to shelter for anyone who does not have a roof over their head. Mayor Eric Adams seemed to cast doubt on the long-standing right, saying in a statement that it must be reassessed. The mayor's chief counsel walked back those comments, saying that the city is reassessing the city's practices around the right to shelter. The city would have to return to court to request changes to the previous court orders.

Migrant buses compared to 1962 "Reverse Freedom Rides" of Black Families

The JFK Presidential Library has compared the transporting of migrants to liberal cities by southern Republican governors in protest of President Joe Biden's immigration policies to the Reverse Freedom Rides led by southern segregationists in 1962. In 1962, a group of conservatives funded one-way trips to the north for Black citizens. Hundreds of Black Americans were transported to cities such as New York, Philadelphia and Chicago.

New York considers keeping migrants bused from Texas on cruise ships

Mayor Eric Adams is considering using cruise ships as temporary housing. The mayor's chief of staff already spoke with leaders from Norwegian Cruise Line. Homeless advocates, though, oppose the idea. Back in 2002, the Bloomberg administration floated a similar idea to use cruise ships no longer in service as accommodations.
