Today we’re looking at Minneapolis school districts’ new policy of prioritizing the layoffs of white teachers over minority one’s regardless of seniority, a new study that alleges rainwater everywhere on earth is unsafe to drink due to contamination from ‘forever chemicals’, claims from ex-NY Times writer Bari Weiss that the paper sought Chuck Schumer’s approval for an op ed by Republican Senator Tim Scott, and split headlines over Trump’s suggestion that the FBI planted evidence during their raid of his Florida estate.

School district will lay off white teachers before minority teachers, per new union contract

An agreement between the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers union and the school district states that white teachers will be laid off before teachers of color, regardless of their seniority. Minneapolis Public Schools is one of the most diverse districts in the state. About 16% of the district's tenured teachers and 27% of its probationary teachers are people of color.

Rainwater everywhere on Earth unsafe to drink due to ‘forever chemicals’, study finds

Researchers at Stockholm University and ETH Zurich University found that the water is unsafe due to the presence of forever chemicals. The study was published last week in the journal "Environmental Science and Technology". Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large family of human-made chemicals known as ‘forever chemicals’ because they don’t break down in the environment. They have non-stick or stain repellent properties so can be found in household items like food packaging, electronics, cosmetics and cookware.

Correction officers win $1.4M in discrimination suit over guarding Derek Chauvin

Eight correctional officers of color were barred from guarding former police officer Derek Chauvin in 2020. The correctional officers claimed in a lawsuit last year that the Ramsey County Adult Detention Center prohibited them from guarding Chauvin. The $1.455 million settlement was approved during a meeting of Ramsey County Board of Commissioners, in the St. Paul, Minnesota, area. Chauvin was convicted in April 2021 of second-degree unintentional murder.

Religious schools exempt from USDA's Title IX rules, can keep meal funding

The USDA announced in May that it would interpret Title IX, which prevents discrimination based on sex at educational institutions, to include sexual orientation and gender identity. This triggered a backlash from religious institutions who said the new rules infringed on their freedoms of speech and religion. The USDA clarified its position on Friday, noting that educational institutions can obtain an exemption if there is a conflict between Title IX and a school's governing religious tenets.

Europe's drought on course to be worst for 500 years, European Commission researcher warns

The drought underway across western Europe has been accompanied by waves of intense heat for months as droughts so often are. The situation has grown worse after two months of no significant rain across a wide swath of western Europe. The UK has just gone through its driest July since 1935. Europe isn't alone in the crisis, with drought conditions also reported in East Africa, the western United States and northern Mexico.
