Yemeni Forces Recapture Key Red Sea Port of Mokha From Houthis
Saudi-backed government forces said they pushed Houthi fighters out of most areas seized last month, with heavy air support from Riyadh.
- On Monday, Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces launched a major offensive to retake the coast around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, pushing Iran-backed Houthis from areas seized last month. The Defence Ministry confirmed the capture of Mocha as Houthi fighters retreated into the highlands.
- Renewed fighting in Yemen has deepened a humanitarian crisis, with the UN migration agency reporting 184,000 people displaced since the war resumed. The conflict, largely stalemated since a 2022 ceasefire, has recently intensified on multiple fronts, particularly in the southwest.
- In Taiz, Houthi forces have surrounded the area, leaving thousands of government troops besieged while civilians face severe shortages. In the al-Mudhaffar area, long queues formed for fuel and gas; "This is the daily state in Taiz," resident Shehab Hazaa said.
- Attacking hundreds of targets, Saudi Arabia provided air cover on Monday to secure the strait and support government ground forces. Houthi-run agencies countered by claiming the group drove government forces from parts of Taiz, while threatening to attack air traffic in Saudi airspace.
- Yemen's internationally recognised president, Rashad al-Alimi, swore on Sunday to fight "until the country is liberated from the grip of the terrorist militia." The conflict threatens major oil export routes, compounding risks alongside existing closures of the Hormuz Strait.
