- During two periods of wildfire activity in July, the team analyzed 23 homes across Greater Manchester, detecting smoke indoors in all monitored properties, including those up to 60km from fires.
- Measurements show average overnight bedroom PM2.5 concentrations rose from 2.7 µg/m³ under normal conditions to 7.8 µg/m³ with windows closed, remaining two to four times higher than usual.
- Dr. Thomas Bannan, lead environmental researcher, noted that closing windows reduces smoke exposure but traps heat indoors, creating a difficult choice for households during simultaneous extreme heat and smoke.
- Scientists are now investigating practical measures including air filtration and cooling strategies to help residents, especially those with respiratory conditions, during future extreme weather events.
