United Way Seeks Donations for B.C. Wildfire Recovery Fund
The fund will help evacuees and community groups buy food, clothing and other essentials as wildfire recovery needs grow.
- On Monday, the Northwestern Ontario Wildfire Community Support Fund doubled its fundraising goal to $50,000 after reaching its initial $25,000 target. The United Way of Thunder Bay and Thunder Bay Community Foundation launched the initiative last Friday.
- Designed to provide immediate relief and long-term recovery, the fund aids wildfire evacuees. United Way of Thunder Bay CEO Albert Brule stated the project complements existing relief efforts already underway across the region.
- From across the country and abroad, donations poured in to support nearly 10,000 people. Brule noted the overwhelming response demonstrates widespread desire to assist those displaced by approximately 90 wildfires burning province-wide.
- Looking toward recovery, the fund will open a formal application process for community organizations. Brule emphasized the need to build the fund further to ensure meaningful contributions when assessing emerging community needs.
- Separately, the Food Action Network of Northwestern Ontario is monitoring food system thresholds to prepare for potential evacuee arrivals. Executive director Sarah Siska noted that while the city's emergency food plan remains inactive, partners are coordinating to manage demand.
