Seahawks Cornerback Devon Witherspoon Says His Lucrative New Contract Won't Change Him
The deal includes $59.05 million in full guarantees over the next two seasons and runs through the 2031 season.
On Saturday, the Seattle Seahawks and cornerback Devon Witherspoon agreed to a four-year, $132 million contract extension. Witherspoon officially signed on Monday, becoming the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history at $33 million annually.
Witherspoon's extension mirrors the path of fellow 2023 first-round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who signed a $168.6 million deal in March. Both players received commitment from Seattle after the team exercised their fifth-year options.
The extension guarantees more than $101 million and keeps Witherspoon in Seattle through 2031, surpassing Cleveland Browns cornerback Denzel Ward's $31.1 million average. This places Witherspoon atop the league's positional salary rankings.
"Means a lot," Witherspoon said of the commitment, insisting the record-setting salary won't change his approach. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald praised the cornerback's professionalism, calling him a foundational player the team is "extremely excited" to secure.
Safety Nick Emmanwori highlighted Witherspoon and Smith-Njigba atop NFL salary lists on his Instagram Story, signaling Seattle's young core commitment. The team aims to sustain its Super Bowl championship momentum through these cornerstone players.
