‘What Have I Done to Deserve It?’ Asks Jewish Veteran, 102, on Antisemitism

On Sunday, 102-year-old Jewish Second World War veteran Monty Goldstein celebrated his birthday and expressed sadness about modern antisemitism in Britain, asking: "What have I done to deserve it?"
Goldstein, who served in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War, recalled experiencing "a lot of antisemitism" in east London during the era of Sir Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists.
"In some sections, we're second-class citizens, which shouldn't be," Goldstein said, noting Jewish people today face the "same situation" through "no fault of our own."
Recent antisemitic hate crimes include a stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green, north London, in April and an arson attack at a synagogue in Whitechapel in May.
Urging fellow countrymen to be "proud" of the nation, Goldstein lamented that England is "not the same" as his youth and some people fear walking the streets.
