What are my rights if my flight gets cancelled and can I get compensation?
The Civil Aviation Authority says airlines must provide care, refunds or replacement flights, while compensation depends on the cause and timing of cancellation.
A total of 200 flights have been cancelled in the UK due to a technical issue affecting air traffic control services, disrupting operations at London Heathrow, Manchester, and Edinburgh.
Passengers are unlikely to be owed compensation for Tuesday's disruptions, as the Civil Aviation Authority classifies the technical issue as an "extraordinary circumstance" outside airline control.
Under UK law, airlines must provide care including food and accommodation until travel resumes, with assistance thresholds depending on flight distance: at least two hours for flights under 1,500km and four hours for over 3,500km.
If airlines fail to arrange assistance during large-scale disruption, travellers may organise their own accommodation and transport, then submit receipts to their original airline for reimbursement.
The CAA advises passengers not to "spend more than is reasonable," as airlines are unlikely to reimburse luxury hotels or alcohol; travellers should retain every receipt to support reimbursement claims.
