- Trace One analysis of U.S. Department of Transportation data shows hazardous materials transit incidents surged 84.8% since 2010, reaching 27,355 annual cases in 2025, with California recording 11,462 incidents between April 1, 2021 and April 1, 2026.
- Highway transport accounted for 119,346 incidents from April 2021 to April 2026, far exceeding air and rail, while large industrial states like Texas reported 11,748 incidents driven by manufacturing and freight movement.
- Smaller states like Alaska report 127.7 incidents per 100,000 residents—the nation's highest per-capita rate—while corrosive materials and flammable liquids accounted for 54,213 and 52,575 incidents respectively.
- Ohio's five-year damage total reached $920.8 million, nearly 30 times that of any other state, driven almost entirely by the February 2023 train derailment in East Palestine.
- Regulators have strengthened enforcement through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration , which increased maximum civil penalties to over $100,000 per violation effective in 2025, while industry adopts Safety Data Sheet management software for compliance.
