Viettel Group and Vietnam's Government Cipher Committee Unveil Security Chip Embedding Vietnamese Cryptography in Silicon
Viettel said the chip encrypts data in hardware and is already used in secure USB devices for government and defence agencies.
- On Tuesday, Military-run Viettel and the Government Cipher Committee unveiled Vietnam's first domestically developed security semiconductor platform, VGC v1.0, while FPT Corporation began trial operations at a testing facility in Bac Ninh province.
- These developments advance Vietnam's national semiconductor strategy to reduce reliance on imported technology, with targets to expand the ecosystem to at least 100 chip design companies and 10 packaging and testing facilities by 2030.
- The VGC v1.0 chip contains 300 million transistors and encrypts data about 15 times faster than software-only solutions, while FPT's 1,600 sq m testing facility at Yen Phong II-C Industrial Park supports maximum capacity of 300 million chips annually.
- FPT expects to undertake its first chip-testing order for a South Korean partner, as Samsung Electronics plans to invest up to US$4.1 billion in memory-chip testing facilities and LG Innotek develops a US$1 billion semiconductor substrate plant.
- Viettel's planned US$1.3 billion fabrication plant faces delays; Reuters reported on October 26 that construction has not yet begun, and negotiations regarding lithography equipment from Dutch supplier ASML remain unresolved for the 2027 target.

The Government Cipher Committee and Viettel have unveiled the VGC v1 0 security chip integrating a domestically developed cryptographic algorithm directly into silicon alongside Vietnam s first domestically designed secure semiconductor platform
Hanoi, Nov 4 (Latin Press) Vietnam fully designed its VGC v1.0 chip and the first security semiconductor platform, announced today the Government's Electronic Portal that described it as a milestone in the protection of digital sovereignty. The post Vietnam designs its first security semiconductor platform first appeared on News Prensa Latina.
To create Vietnam's first domestically designed security chip, more than 40 engineers and experts worked for 24 months. One of the most remarkable details was that the electronic circuit diagram had to be encrypted before being sent to the manufacturing plant, in order to minimize the risk of technology leakage.
The Government Cipher Committee and the Military Telecommunications and Industry Corporation (Viettel) have just announced the VGC v1.0 security chip and the first security semiconductor platform designed entirely in Vietnam.
