Vanderbilt Wide Receiver Removed From Team After Alleged Chokehold Assault Near Nashville Pedestrian Bridge
Vanderbilt said Barnett violated team standards after police charged him with aggravated assault by strangulation in a downtown confrontation.
Vanderbilt Athletics removed wide receiver Kayleb Barnett from the football program following his arrest on felony assault charges. The university cited a violation of team and university standards.
Early Saturday, a Metro Nashville Police Department officer witnessed Barnett holding a victim in a chokehold near the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge, according to an arrest affidavit. The victim appeared unconscious and bleeding.
Barnett was charged with aggravated assault by strangulation, identity theft, and use of a false ID. The Davidson County Sheriff released him on a $5,000 bond, with a settlement hearing scheduled for Nov 13.
While Barnett told police the victim initiated the confrontation, officers identified him as the primary aggressor after witnesses reported he threw the first punch.
Previously listed as a sophomore wide receiver on the Vanderbilt 2026 roster, Barnett recorded seven catches for 36 yards and one rush for two yards this season for The Commodores.
