NSL’s Vancouver Rise Eliminate Sporting Director Role, Part Ways with Stephanie Labbé
The club said the move is part of a 2027 planning shift, and chief soccer officer Robyn Gayle will keep leading the sporting department.
On Friday, Vancouver Rise FC announced the elimination of the sporting director position, resulting in the departure of Steph Labbé. Interim president Aditi Bhatt stated the move reflects a "strategic shift in how the club is investing in resources."
As the club's first-ever hire, Labbé helped build the squad that captured the inaugural Northern Super League championship last year. The former Canadian national team goalkeeper transitioned into management after retiring from playing in 2022.
This departure marks the second significant organizational change in recent weeks, following the dismissal of head coach Anja Heiner-Möller last month. Assistant Iain Darbyshire replaced her.
The Rise currently hold an 8-win, 11-loss, and 4-draw record while fighting to secure the final playoff berth. They visit Ottawa on Sunday needing a win to stay in contention.
Labbé wrote on Instagram about the decision, stating "it's clear with the club's new direction, it's time for me to look forward." The club cited 2027 planning as the reason for the elimination.
