Vance announces $57M grant boost for meatpacking facilities
The grants would support 147 projects in 40 states and aim to expand competition in an industry dominated by a few major companies.
- On Monday, Vice President Vance and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced $57.4 million in tentative awards for 147 meat and poultry processing projects across 40 states, pending Congressional approval.
- The United States cattle herd has fallen to its lowest level in 75 years, with beef output forecast to fall about 4% this year, prompting the administration's investment to rebuild processing capacity.
- Vance told the crowd, "Today, the Department of Agriculture is announcing millions of dollars in new grants towards 10 meatpacking facilities right here in the state of Kansas." Prior rounds awarded more than $200 million to independent businesses.
- Agriculture Secretary Rollins said, "Providing more local processing opportunities will continue to give confidence to our ranchers," though the Department of Agriculture offers no immediate price promise for consumers.
- Separately, Brazilian exporters and United States importers should monitor the lean beef import quota, with a third tranche opening on October 31 and the window closing on November 30, 2026.
