Tien Too Good as Monfils Makes Final Grand Slam Bow at US Open
Tien, 20, controlled the match and ended Monfils’ final Grand Slam run before advancing to face Jakub Mensik.
On Thursday, American Learner Tien defeated French veteran Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 at the Open, ending the veteran's Grand Slam career.
Monfils, who first competed as a junior in 2003, will retire at the end of the year after his final match concluded under lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Reflecting on his Canadian Open victory over Monfils in Montreal last month, Tien said the prior win "helped with the nerves" and prevented a comeback in this clash of generations.
Following a video tribute, Monfils told the crowd, "I want to thank you all," calling New York fans his second-best audience after Paris.
Advancing to the third round, Tien will face Czech Jakub Mensik after dictating play throughout the match against the veteran Monfils.
