UNBC researcher helps further understanding of global glacier loss
A leading scientist, Brian Menounos, collaborated globally on glacier health research published in Nature.
Glaciers lost between 2% and 39% of their ice from 2000 to 2023, with western Canada losing 23% of volume in that time.
The research supports the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's call for urgent action due to glacier loss effects on freshwater and sea levels.
Menounos stated, 'No one tool or method is superior, but by combining them, we get the most consistent and reliable picture of how Earth's glaciers are doing.
