Cargo Ship's Officer Arrested After Fatal Collision with Fishing Boat Off Mie
A 21-year-old officer was arrested for professional negligence after a cargo ship struck an anchored fishing boat, killing two and injuring 10, the Toba Coast Guard said.
- On Friday, February 20, a collision off Toba, Mie Prefecture, killed two and injured at least seven when the 499-ton cargo ship struck the anchored 16-ton, 15m fishing boat.
- The fishing boat had left Toba port around 11:40 a.m. and been anchored near the scene from noon, while the cargo ship Shinsei Maru departed Kinuura around 10 a.m. bound for Mizushima, Okayama Prefecture.
- Rescue teams and nearby vessels pulled people from the water after the collision split the fishing boat's hull in two, retrieving 12 fishermen and the captain while one missing person was found an hour later.
- Law enforcement moved quickly to detain Hanon Sugimoto, 21-year-old second navigation officer, on suspicion of professional negligence as the cargo ship was held for inspection and later directed to port.
- With investigators en route, authorities will examine the vessel's recent history, including the fact that the cargo ship entered service in 2025, as the Japan Transport Safety Board dispatches four investigators.
