U.S. Women Arrested for Allegedly Smuggling $1 Million Worth of Drugs to Japan, One Claims She Was Motivated by Free Trip

On Friday, Tokyo police arrested two 25-year-old American women at Haneda Airport for allegedly smuggling $1 million worth of cannabis into the country.
Arriving from New York last Saturday, the pair carried two suitcases where "cannabis-like dried plants were secretly stored." One suspect claimed she was motivated by a free trip, while the other denied knowing the contents.
Authorities reported the 30kg of cannabis is valued at about 150 million yen, or $970,000. Police allege the women "conspired with someone else whose name is unknown" to transport the illicit cargo.
Arrested on suspicion of violating the drugs and psychotropics control law, or smuggling to gain profit, the pair also breached two other laws, officials added.
Japan has some of the world's strictest drug laws, with convictions for smuggling cannabis for profit carrying up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 3 million yen.
