Trump Lends Support for Darline Graham in South Carolina as Republican Anxiety Rises in Senate Race
Andrews is trying to win over disaffected Republicans as GOP leaders worry the seat is key to preserving their Senate majority.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump travels to Rock Hill, South Carolina, to bolster Republican nominee Darline Graham's campaign, signaling GOP anxiety in the competitive Senate race.
Republican Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Graham in July to fill the vacancy left by her brother, the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, before she secured the GOP nomination in August for a full six-year term.
During a Wednesday campaign stop in the Upstate, Andrews asked voters to "try something new," while registered Republican Brent Chaplin encouraged voters to "put some brainpower" into candidate selection rather than automatic partisan support.
Benjamin Updegraft, a 32-year-old software engineer, criticized the potential for the Senate seat to remain in the Graham family, asserting, "The Senate is not an inherited position." Holding the seat remains essential for Republicans to maintain their majority.
Andrews faces a steep challenge in South Carolina, which has not sent a Democrat to the Senate in nearly three decades, with her success hinging on winning support from disaffected voters in a state Trump won by nearly 18 percent in 2024.
