- On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights launched investigations into five medical schools to determine if their admissions practices violate Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
- These probes follow an executive order from President Donald Trump directing agencies to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion ideology to "ensure transparency in admissions for institutions of higher education and end discriminatory race-based admissions processes," the administration stated.
- Investigators are reviewing policies at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Western University of Health Sciences, and William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
- The Office for Civil Rights alleges these schools may have engaged in racial discrimination, while the DOJ separately reported that the University of California San Diego Medical School has favored Black and Hispanic applicants over white and Asian candidates.
- Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey stated, "Your race should not decide whether or not you can study medicine," though none of the five medical schools have issued public responses to the announcement as of publication.
