TNRD issues evacuation alert due to Riley Creek wildfire

On the evening of July 31, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District issued evacuation orders for two properties at Texas Creek Road near Lillooet, while placing 14 properties along Lytton-Lillooet Highway 12 and Kirbys Flat Road on evacuation alert.
First discovered on June 24, the lightning-caused Riley Creek wildfire has grown to 1,150 hectares, burning nine kilometres south of Lillooet in steep, rocky terrain that poses a safety risk for responding firefighters.
Nine firefighters, seven pieces of heavy equipment and multiple heliports are assigned to the fire; Personnel are building guards and establishing water delivery systems, though the BC Wildfire Service reports no safe areas currently exist for direct attack suppression.
The fire continues to see increased activity on its southern flank and is slowly progressing south and southeast at high elevation, with smoke highly visible to surrounding communities; Structure protection personnel are increasing their presence ahead of Saturday afternoon, Aug. 1, when a cold front will bring increased wind gusts.
Multiple First Nations and regional authorities including the Cayoose Creek Indian Band, District of Lillooet and T'it'q'et First Nation have also issued evacuation alerts; residents can access information through the TNRD Emergency Operations Centre dashboard and Squamish-Lillooet Regional District EOC pages.
