Frustrated by economic stagnation, inflation and corruption, the Hungarians chose Viktor Orbán from scratch. They hope for an upswing and a pro-European turnaround with Péter Magyar, a former follower of the long-term prime minister. Hungary now has a chance of a new beginning. But it would be premature to write Orbán off.
Hungary takes note of the end of Viktor Orban's reign. After 16 years of power interrupted, the one who put his country in a settled cup conceded his defeat yesterday, carried away by the voters' fatigue in the face of corruption and countless attacks on the rule of law.
