Turkish group Pegasus may buy Czech Airlines and with it the carrier Smartwings. The merger has been approved by the Office for the Protection of Competition (ÚOHS).
Pegasus Airlines, a leading representative of the Turkish civil aviation sector, has been given the green light to acquire Czech-based airline Smartwings in order to strengthen its position in the European market.
The Czech Competition Authority has conditionally approved Pegasus's €154 million acquisition of Smartwings. The decision stipulates that a portion of the summer season slots on the Prague-Antalya route will be transferred to another airline.
Smartwings will continue under its own brand even after the change of ownership. Pegasus wants to strengthen its position in the European aviation market with the acquisition.
