Tesla misled South Korean customers about automated-driving tech, consumer group alleges

The group says Tesla charged 9.043 million won for software that works on only about 20% of registered vehicles, according to parliamentary testimony.

  • On Thursday, the consumer group Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty plans to file a complaint with the Korea Fair Trade Commission, accusing Tesla of misleading tens of thousands of South Korean customers regarding Full Self-Driving software.
  • Full Self-Driving is usable on about 20% of vehicles registered in South Korea because most are China-manufactured, lacking the safety agreement recognition that US-made Teslas possess.
  • Sales of ineligible China-manufactured Teslas grew more than fivefold since 2023, with 99% of new Teslas sold last year unable to legally use FSD, according to data submitted to the National Assembly.
  • The KFTC launched a probe into Tesla's advertising earlier this year, while Tesla Korea country manager Seo Young-deuk confirmed the company only recently began seeking certification for China-made vehicles.
  • Choi Young-suk of Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty stated that Tesla "generated substantial revenue by selling an expensive driver-assistance system to mass-market buyers who cannot use it for even a single day," while FSD requires active human supervision.
