Elgin Sessions blocked a Tennessee punt and returned it for a touchdown to give the Yellow Jackets a 10-7 lead in the first quarter. The Volunteers responded with 24 unanswered points to reclaim control.
Tennessee's ground game totaled 299 rushing yards, proving decisive in the victory. Cornerback Dejuan Lane intercepted Georgia Tech quarterback Alberto Mendoza and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown, giving Tennessee a lead it would not relinquish.
Georgia Tech cornerback Jaylen Mbakwe was taken off the field on a stretcher after colliding with teammate Jordan Walker during the third quarter. Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter returned from a one-game suspension with eight tackles and a pass deflection.
Tennessee hosts Kennesaw State next Saturday, Sept. 19, while Georgia Tech faces Mercer the same day. The Yellow Jackets have lost their first two games for the first time since 1989, marking a historic drought.
