Teens say they are turning to AI for advice, friendship and ‘to get out of thinking’
UNITED STATES, JUL 23 – A Common Sense Media study found 31% of teens find AI conversations as satisfying or more than real friendships, raising concerns about youth mental health and social skills.
- Teens say they are increasingly interacting with AI as if it were a companion, seeking advice, emotional support and help with everyday decision-making and problem-solving.
- More than 70% of teens have used AI companions, and half use them regularly, as per a study by Common Sense Media.
- The study found AI companions can produce sexual material, give dangerous advice and offer harmful content, while 31% of teens said conversations with AI were 'as satisfying or more satisfying' than talking with real friends.
