Deputy Fatally Shoots Man in Knox County, TBI Investigating
TBI agents are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses after a deputy shot a 31-year-old man reported armed and acting erratically.
The TBI is leading independent inquiries into two separate fatal officer-involved shootings that occurred Sunday morning, working to determine the circumstances behind the incidents involving the Knox County Sheriff and the Sullivan County Sheriff.
At a Weigel on Clinton Highway, a Knox County Sheriff deputy shot and killed Caleb Barber after responding to 911 calls about an armed man. "The situation escalated, resulting in the deputy firing shots," the TBI said.
During an attempt to serve felony warrants, Sullivan County Sheriff deputies shot and killed Joshua Delp at a Kingsport apartment complex on Bloomingdale Pike.
TBI agents are collecting evidence and conducting interviews at both scenes. Officials confirmed that no deputies were injured during the fatal encounter at the Kingsport apartment complex.
Findings from these independent reviews will be submitted to the District Attorney General for final determination, as such investigations are standard protocol for the TBI whenever law enforcement officers are involved in fatal shootings.
