Syria Calls for Independent Probe Into Sinking of Ship in Black Sea
Syria wants an independent investigation into the attack as Bulgaria ended the search after finding no survivors among the 10 crew members.
- On Thursday, the Syrian General Authority for Ports and Customs called on the International Maritime Organization and Bulgarian authorities to investigate the sinking of cargo ship Alfa Watan in the Black Sea, which left 10 crew members missing.
- The Alfa Watan sank after a drone attack early Tuesday within Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone, 70 nm off the coast; authorities discovered debris and 3 life rafts near the site but no survivors were found.
- Mazen Aloush, director for international relations of the Syrian General Authority for Ports and Customs, questioned why Bulgarian search operations ended before the missing crew's fate was determined, including 10 crew members total.
- President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky alleged a joint probe with Bulgarian forces confirmed Moscow carried out the strike, while Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced plans to procure 5 additional surface-to-air missile systems.
- Amid uncertainty regarding the strike near Byala, officials noted another vessel suffered fire damage in the area, leaving NATO member Bulgaria concerned about regional escalation in the Black Sea.
