Sturko Promises 25K New School Spaces
CentreBC says the plan would target the fastest-growing districts first and add education supports, including 1,500 assistants and 350 care workers.
CentreBC leader Elenore Sturko pledged on Friday to create 25,000 permanent public school classroom spaces by 2031, prioritizing districts with the most portable classrooms and fastest population growth.
Rapid growth of young families in Langley and Surrey has created a disproportionate reliance on portable classrooms; Sturko said her party would use pre-fabricated and modular construction to replace them.
The platform also includes adding 1,500 education assistants and 350 child- and youth-care workers, expanding school food programs to 40 per cent of students by 2030, and restoring letter grades for Grade 4 and up.
Sturko called the incumbent NDP government's deficit spending a "payday loan," claiming her party has a path to balance in two terms while funding these initiatives.
Campaigning outside Walnut Grove Secondary in Langley with regional candidates, Sturko contrasted her platform with NDP leader David Eby and Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson.
