Despondent residents of Rio de Janeiro’s largest favela voted in Brazil’s presidential election with little hope that either leftist incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva or right-wing challenger Flavio Bolsonaro will resolve the rampant violence, poor sanitation, and high cost of living plaguing their community.
Tired of insecurity and the struggle to reach the end of the month, the inhabitants of the largest favela of Rio de Janeiro come to the polls this Sunday without hope that their vote will change the reality of this gigantic slum located on the slope of a mountain.
