Stroke Recovery Starts Early and Continues for a Lifetime
The American Stroke Association says early, personalized rehabilitation can improve independence and quality of life as recovery continues for months or years.
The American Stroke Association's 2026 Guideline for Adult Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery recommends that medically stable survivors begin rehabilitation within 48 hours, addressing care for approximately 800,000 people who have a stroke annually.
"Stroke rehabilitation is complicated," said Lorie Gage Richards, an occupational therapist at the University of Utah, emphasizing that care must be personalized to help individuals gain independence and improve quality of life.
Survivors should connect with a healthcare team to develop a rehabilitation plan based on personal goals; for one person this may mean dressing independently, while others prioritize returning to work or driving safely.
Beyond physical therapy, survivors should ask their healthcare team to assess emotional health, including depression and anxiety, to address invisible impacts like loss of identity and confidence during recovery.
Meaningful progress can continue for months or years after survivors leave the hospital or complete formal therapy, with life after stroke remaining meaningful as survivors find new ways to pursue what matters most.
