10-Year-Old Staten Island Girl Injured in Fireworks Accident, Parks Department Employee Arrested
Joshua Moe was charged after police said he lit the explosive for the child, who suffered severe hand injuries and was taken to hospital in stable condition.
- On Tuesday evening, NYC Parks Department employee Joshua Moe, 24, was arrested after allegedly helping a 10-year-old girl light an M-80 firework that exploded in Gen. Douglas MacArthur Park, Staten Island.
- The child reportedly discovered the firework in a park bathroom before asking Moe for a lighter, which he provided because he "wanted to make them happy and have fun," authorities said.
- Responding NYPD officers applied a tourniquet to the victim's left hand before EMS personnel transported her to Staten Island University Hospital, where she remained in stable condition after losing several fingers.
- Following an investigation, the 122nd Precinct charged Moe with reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child; he was arraigned Wednesday in criminal court and granted supervised release.
- Local residents questioned maintenance standards at parks, while the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation is conducting an internal investigation into how the firework remained in the facility.
