State reps warn against electing socialist-endorsed candidates on the state level
DSA-backed contenders are on ballots in two states as Republicans warn the races could reshape legislative control and policy priorities.
Voters in Michigan and Oregon face November ballots featuring candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America running for state representative seats.
Democrats hold a two-seat majority in Michigan's Senate while Republicans maintain six seats in the House; Oregon experienced a Democratic trifecta for 18 years amid rising living costs and crime.
Michigan's Chris Gilmer-Hill and Dylan Wegela, plus Oregon's Tammy Carpenter and Lesly, campaign on housing protections, single-payer healthcare, and publicly owned utilities. DSA described Gilmer-Hill as "a lifelong Detroiter, environmental activist, and union member."
Legislators warn DSA-endorsed candidates will worsen high taxes and crime; Michigan State Rep. Bill G. Schuette said voters should "stop the DSA agenda before it takes root in Lansing."
Beyond Michigan and Oregon, DSA-endorsed candidates and ballot initiatives span from California and New York to Florida and Indiana, according to the DSA website.
