Spring Lake Park Mayoral Race Ends in Tie, Winner Could Be Decided by Coin Flip
The winner will be decided by a random drawing after Robert Nelson and Halyn Roth finished with 1,401 votes each.
In Spring Lake Park, Minnesota, the mayoral race ended in a dead tie, with incumbent Robert Nelson and challenger Halyn Roth each receiving 1,401 votes after all three precincts reported their results.
Minnesota law requires tied elections to be resolved by lot, meaning the city will decide the next mayor by a game of chance rather than through a recount or revote.
Challenger Halyn Roth said he plans to request a recount if Nelson wins the drawing, while City Administrator Daniel Buchholtz defended the process as 'fair' and outlined in state law for a long time.
The City Council will canvass the election results during a public meeting on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at Spring Lake Park City Hall.
Candidates have until Nov 16 to request a recount, with any potential recount tentatively scheduled for Nov 17 at the Anoka County Courthouse.
