Spain earthquake: 4.3 tremor rocks Almeria as Brits waken to find their beds shaking
- On Monday the National Geographic Institute confirmed a magnitude 4.3 quake struck near Tabernas just before 1am, with the epicentre close to the Desierto de Tabernas solar plant, waking residents and tourists.
- Since February 3, 2026 the National Seismic Network of the IGN has recorded 287 small earthquakes, mostly below M3 with M3.8 the largest, located southwest of Málaga and southeast of Cádiz at less than 10 km depth.
- Minutes after the main quake, the National Geographic Institute recorded five aftershocks near the Tabernas epicentre with magnitudes 1.8, 1.7, 1.6, 1.5 and 1.9 at 1:03 a.m., 1:06 a.m., 1:09 a.m., 1:16 a.m. and 1:23 a.m.
- The National Geographic Institute said it has assessed 42 macroseismic reports with a maximum intensity IV and received more than 440 questionnaires during continuous review.
- The earthquake in Tabernas follows recent tremors with variable depths, including a historic July 14 magnitude 5.3 quake last year, fitting regional patterns.
