Southern Miss Opens Season with an 82-35 Win over Tougaloo
Southern Miss held Tougaloo to 35 points and forced 22 turnovers while 13 players scored in a balanced season-opening win.
On Monday, Southern Miss men's basketball opened its 2026-27 season with an 82-35 victory over Tougaloo inside Reed Green Coliseum, using dominant defense and balanced scoring to set the tone early.
Coach Jay Ladner adjusted the starting lineup after two uninspiring preseason exhibitions, shifting away from a two-big setup to improve floor spacing, which proved effective immediately.
Southern Miss collected 15 steals and five blocks while forcing 22 Tougaloo turnovers, with 13 different players scoring and the bench accounting for 45 points.
This 47-point victory extended the program's home-opening winning streak to 11 straight games and marked the largest margin of victory in the series against Tougaloo.
Southern Miss will travel to Ames, Iowa, Friday to face Iowa State in its first road test, beginning a tough non-conference stretch early in the season.
