Sony Pictures, Lionsgate partner on live-action 'Naruto' movie
On Tuesday, Lionsgate officially greenlit the live-action Naruto film, announcing a partnership with Sony Pictures to co-finance and manage international distribution for the project.
The agreement follows a highly competitive multi-studio bidding war and reunites Lionsgate with director Destin Daniel Cretton, who recently achieved global box office success with Spider-Man: Brand New Day at $2.52 billion worldwide.
Masashi Kishimoto's original manga series has sold more than 250 million copies across over 60 countries, while the anime adaptation has reached audiences in more than 145 countries.
Director Cretton will write, direct, and produce the feature, with production scheduled to begin in spring 2027 alongside producers Ari Arad, Tetsu Fujimura, and Jeyun Munford.
Although casting details remain under wraps, reports suggest Charles Melton is in talks to play Kakashi Hatake, the mentor to the series' main trio known as Team 7.
