RHP Sonny Gray Declines Option, Joins List of 11 New Free Agents
Gray will get a $10 million buyout after posting an 18-5 record and a 2.72 ERA last season.
On Friday, Boston Red Sox right-hander Sonny Gray declined his $30 million mutual option for 2027, officially entering free agency with a $10 million buyout.
Gray excelled during his 2026 campaign, recording an 18-5 record with a 2.72 ERA over 29 starts while leading the American League in win-loss percentage and ranking in the 91st percentile for Fastball Run Value.
Despite his success, the season ended in frustration when manager Chad Tracy pulled Gray during Wild Card Game 2. Gray said he "would have liked to have been trusted in that moment" regarding the analytics-driven decision.
Industry analysts project the 36-year-old pitcher could secure a multi-year deal worth between $58 million and $75 million. He leads a group of 11 players who reached free agency following option decisions.
With his birthday on Nov. 7, Gray remains a highly sought-after arm expected to join a contender for the 2027 season as teams look to bolster rotations with proven veteran talent.
