Single buyers are gaining ground in the housing market, despite rising house prices and higher mortgage rates. Mortgage advisory chain De Hypotheker notes that the number of mortgage applications from singles was clearly on the rise last quarter, while that from couples increased only very slightly.
The number of mortgage applications among single buyers rose by 11 percent in the third quarter of this year. This is evident from De Hypotheker’s Mortgage Index. According to the mortgage advisor, singles are benefiting from the large number of rental properties that have been put on the market by investors. "Due to the Affordable Rent Act, it is less attractive to rent out," says Jilles Bouter of De Hypotheker.
