Sceye and SoftBank Corp. Complete Stratospheric Connectivity Demonstration in Japan, Advancing Towards HAPS Commercialization
The 13-day mission tested mobile broadband, edge computing and drone links from a HAPS platform, SoftBank said.
- On August 9, 2026, Sceye launched its ST1 mission from New Mexico, traveling more than 15,000 km across the Pacific to Japan in 13 days to verify High-Altitude Platform Systems broadband connectivity.
- This flight builds on the Endurance Program, where Sceye's SE2 HAPS traveled more than 10,000 km to Brazil earlier this year, supported by SoftBank Corp.'s 2025 investment in stratospheric infrastructure.
- Equipped with SceyeCELL, a 'cell tower in the sky,' the platform operated at approximately 16.5 km altitude while demonstrating edge computing with over 40% latency reduction compared to cloud processing.
- Testing included voice, text messaging, and emergency communications, proving one HAPS can cover the equivalent area of approximately 500 terrestrial towers when deployed at full scale.
