Airlines cancel flights to Saudi Arabia after Riyadh airport attacks

Saudi aviation officials extended the shutdown to allow safety inspections after Houthi strikes killed at least 13 people and wounded more than 300, officials said.

  • On Tuesday, Saudi-led coalition airstrikes struck a Yemeni Oil Company facility in Al-Sabahah, west of Sanaa, after the coalition issued rare evacuation warnings for civilians in the Houthi-controlled capital.
  • The strike follows a Houthi attack on Riyadh's international airport Saturday that killed at least 13 people and injured more than 300, escalating the conflict between the Iran-backed rebels and Saudi Arabia.
  • Houthi spokesperson Yehya Saree warned of a "harsh and painful" response, while the Yemen Petroleum Company claimed the Al-Sabahah facility "does not contain any stock of petroleum products."
  • Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in a Tuesday call, "There is no justification for these attacks, and they cannot be accepted," urging diplomacy.
  • The U.S. State Department raised its Saudi Arabia travel advisory to Level 3, "Reconsider Travel," as Houthi political bureau member Mohammed al-Bukhaiti threatened a "swift and painful response" against U.S. regional interests.
