Salmon Arm Couple Urges Businesses to Put Dignity Before Differences
The company said it will look into the complaint after a couple said an employee repeatedly used the wrong pronoun during an insurance transaction.
- On July 27, Sheena and Paige visited Sussex Insurance inside the Salmon Arm Walmart to insure a used car, where an employee repeatedly misgendered Paige despite Sheena's request to use 'she/her' pronouns.
- During what should have been a standard transaction, the employee allegedly lost her temper, shouting 'I'm going to f***ing kill you' at her computer, which Paige described as unprofessional.
- Following the encounter, The Milos reported the incident to a Walmart store manager immediately and submitted formal complaints to Sussex Insurance head office to ensure their concerns were officially registered.
- Sussex Insurance Group Vice President of Operations Jason Alexander contacted Sheena after The Observer emailed the company, stating 'Our expectation is that every customer is treated professionally, respectfully, and courteously.'
- The Milos note their experience 'highlighted a gap that many businesses face,' calling for updated inclusivity training so staff are equipped with tools like understanding correct pronouns to welcome all customers.
