UK Restaurant Chain to Shut All 196 Sites in Weeks as Warning to Customers Issued
Whitbread is closing 106 restaurants and warning loyalty members to use points before schemes end, with about 3,800 jobs at risk.
Whitbread will shutter all 105 Beefeater and 89 Brewers Fayre restaurants in early September. Brewers Fayre closes September 7, followed by Beefeater on September 10, 2026.
These closures support a broader strategy to convert restaurant sites into additional Premier Inn hotel rooms. Whitbread aims to sell around £1.5 billion in freehold property to expand its portfolio to 96,000 rooms by 2031.
Schemes including the Beefeater Reward Club, Bonus Club, and Tasty Rewards close August 31. Customers must enter loyalty data by Monday, August 24, and redeem points before 7am on September 1 when unredeemed points expire.
The transition places nearly 3,800 jobs at risk across the company. Whitbread chief executive Dominic Paul stated the firm is working to support affected staff, though significant redundancies remain likely.
While some customers expressed sadness, others noted the brand declined in recent years. One recalled family birthdays, saying "I feel sad about this, but I guess the fact I hadn't been to one for 30 years is part of the problem.
