Alex DeBrincat Signing Massive Extension With the Red Wings
Alex DeBrincat posted 41 goals and 85 points last season as Detroit moves to keep him off next summer’s free-agent market.
On Tuesday, the Detroit Red Wings neared a seven-year, $91 million contract extension with forward Alex DeBrincat following the team's 5-4 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils.
Coach Todd McLellan emphasized DeBrincat's value, stating, "Critical is a real good word for him," as the forward has recorded a team-high eight points this season.
Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff secured the deal, though he still manages unresolved contract negotiations with defenseman Simon Edvinsson and a standing trade request from captain Dylan Larkin.
Valued at $13 million annually, the extension surpasses Dylan Larkin's $8.7 million average value and replaces DeBrincat's expiring four-year, $31.5 million contract.
Amid the extension, Detroit sits last in the Atlantic Division with a 1-3-2 record, and disenchanted fans chanted "Sell the team!" at owner and CEO Chris Ilitch.
