Sister June Carpenter, One of the Few Remaining Shakers, Dies in Maine. She Was 88.
She was one of only three Shakers at the village and served as cataloger of the Shaker Library.
- On Tuesday, Sister June Carpenter, one of the last members of the only remaining community of the Shaker religious movement, died at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in New Gloucester, Maine.
- Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village remains the last active community of the celibate religious movement founded in the 18th and 19th centuries. Carpenter joined on May 31, 1989, after visiting the library dedication in 1988 and volunteering to organize their collections.
- A trained librarian, Carpenter ensured "the Shakers' remarkable legacy could be studied and understood" by cataloging the village's extensive historical records. She also maintained the community's book of birthdays and visited fellow Shakers in nursing homes.
- Her death leaves only two practicing Shakers at the site: Brother Arnold Hadd and Sister April Baxter, who joined the community last year. In accordance with Carpenter's wishes, there will be no visiting hours or funeral service.
- While the religious movement's ranks diminished after the Civil War, the Shakers' cultural influence persists through their "artfully simple furniture and architecture" and the popular melody "Simple Gifts." The village maintains National Historic Landmark status.
